Dry volume converter illustration showing two grain baskets of slightly different heights, a wooden peck measure and a dry quart box, with a note that one US bushel is 35.2391 liters, one UK bushel is 36.3687 liters and one bushel is 4 pecks or 32 dry quarts

How many liters fit in a bushel? Two answers are correct: 35.23907 for the US bushel and 36.36872 for the UK bushel, a gap of 3.2057%. This dry volume converter keeps both side by side, with 15 units: the liter and three families, namely US dry measures, UK measures and seven measures labeled Biblical.

Definition: Two Bushels, Two Pecks and Their Parts

In the US family, everything hangs on the bushel. National Bureau of Standards Circular 425 gives the United States standard bushel a capacity of 2,150.42 cubic inches. With the inch at exactly 2.54 centimeters, that makes 35.2390701669 liters.

The smaller US units divide that bushel by powers of two. A bushel holds 4 pecks of 8.80977 liters, a peck holds 8 dry quarts of 1.10122 liters, and a dry quart holds 2 dry pints of 0.55061 liters. One bushel is therefore 32 dry quarts or 64 dry pints, and a dry quart is about 10.12% larger than a liter.

The barrel dry (US) does not fit that chain of halvings. A Rhode Island statute on the standard barrel for apples accepts as standard any barrel holding 7,056 cubic inches, which is 115.62712 liters, about 3.2812 US bushels or 104.999 dry quarts.

The UK family has only two units. The UK peck is 9.09218 liters and the UK bushel 36.36872 liters, exactly four UK pecks. Both are whole numbers of imperial gallons of 4.54609 liters: 2 for the peck, 8 for the bushel. Every US and UK pair in this converter differs by one ratio, so a UK peck exceeds a US peck by the same 3.2057% as a UK bushel exceeds a US bushel.

Seven Measures Labeled Biblical

The third family has seven names: cor, homer, ephah, seah, omer, cab and log. Their values form a single chain built on the ephah, set at 21.9999989 liters, a hair under 22. The cor and the homer are both 10 ephahs, 219.99999 liters, and they are the only two units in this converter that share one value, so 15 listed units hold 14 distinct ones.

Below the ephah, 3 seahs, 10 omers, 18 cabs or 72 logs make one ephah. A seah is 7.33333 liters, an omer 2.2 liters, a cab 1.22222 liters and a log 0.30556 liters, and a cor holds 720 logs, the span of the whole converter from its smallest unit to its largest.

Set against the modern units, an ephah is about 0.6243 US bushels and an omer about 1.998 US dry quarts, while a cab comes to about 1.11 dry quarts and a log to about 0.555 dry pints. The cor holds 6.243 US bushels or 6.049 UK bushels. No legal definition was available to check these seven values against, so they are used as they are, without correction.

Everyday Conversions and Corrected Values

A bushels to liters conversion multiplies by 35.2390701669, so 15 US bushels is 528.58605 liters. The reverse, liters to bushels, multiplies by 0.0283775933, so 15 liters is 0.42566 US bushels. A dry quarts to liters conversion multiplies by 1.1012209427, and 15 dry quarts is 16.51831 liters. A pecks to liters conversion multiplies by 8.8097675417, so 15 US pecks is 132.14651 liters.

Older tables list four US values slightly too high. They give 35.2390701696 liters for the bushel instead of 35.2390701669, and the same excess of about 0.08 parts per billion carries over to the peck and the dry quart; the barrel dry is listed at 115.6271236039 liters instead of 115.627123584. The gap only appears from the tenth or eleventh significant digit, and this converter follows the definitions in cubic inches.

Method and sources. Every factor was checked against its definition with 50-digit arithmetic. The US bushel rests on a federal circular, of which only an extract was read; the barrel dry rests on a state statute, a secondary proof, since the federal handbook was not read. The seven Biblical values could not be checked against any definition.
